In Courage Circle today we spoke a little about Pink Shirt Day. We also talked about how cheating can be a form of bullying. Next in number talks we played a game. Each table was a team. Each team had to explain how they solved a given equation and which strategy worked best for them. In the end we all won, because the winning teams shared their points with the other teams. So everyone had the same points. It was very generous and pink of them. In language talks we wrote sentences in our table groups that would get a 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the report card. This helped us know how to improve our sentences so we can get a 4. After gym we had computers to work on our soapstone writing. After lunch we worked on reading a newspaper article and answering questions around it.
Homework: Tell your parents about why we chose this title for this blog. In Courage Circle we discussed what to say to someone who is being bullied. We were talking about pink shirt day tomorrow so we moved our schedule around. Instead of doing math in the morning, we did it in the afternoon. After gym and music we began making posters for Pink Shirt Day. We wrote messages about how to handle a bully or bullying. It's the people that stand up for others that really help.
Homework: Tell your parents what you know about power imbalance. Today in Courage Circle we were talking about the number of days, weeks, months in a year. We also discussed the names of different relationships such as uncle and aunt. Then Mr. Bhachu lead us through number talks and then gave us some word problems using family relationships to solve in our Math Scribblers. When we were done our snacks we had 10 minutes free time on computers for our indoor recess. Next we used our computers to write about our sculptures. We were working on expanding our sentences and using correct punctuation. After lunch we had quiet reading, a quick introduction to Pink Shirt Day followed by gym and music. When we came back we continued learning about Anti-Bullying day. Remember to wear something pink on Wednesday.
Homework: Ask your parents about their siblings and any cousins you might have. How many cousins do you have? How old are they? Where do they live? Blog written by Zainab, Megan, and Justin. Recorded by Mr. Bhachu P.S. If you haven't paid for our In class field trip, please do so online. Today in Circle we had interesting conversations about time and money. We noticed that 1oo pennies are equal to $ 1. But for time, you need 60 minutes to make an hour. We decided that money is easier to work with. Next we went into number talks. In number talks we added using the names of different coins. For example what is the sum of a quarter and a dime? After students used computers and Epic books website to research information about life in the arctic. Students added this information to their slide shows. Next we went to gym and then lunch. We read quietly after lunch. In social studies we were exploring life in an arctic town. After recess we continued our story writing and some people were able to get feedback.
Homework: Practice adding and subtracting coins with your parents. Blog written by student volunteers and their teacher. In Courage circle lot's of people had stories of what they did during the 5 day break. After circle we had number talks. Next we went to the learning commons, gym and then music. We had to skip Auction in the morning because some students were working with another teacher. Then we had lunch. When we came back we read quietly until Auction. In Auction we bid on our jobs. Then we had recess and we got to go outside, When we came back we worked on our story plans. Those who were done were able to get a computer to research the new website we are using. It is called Epic. In the website Mr. Bhachu assigned books about the arctic so we can get more information for our slide shows.
Please remember to pay for the sculptures we are going to make on Thursday. Blog written by some helpful students who like to help when help is needed. Homework: Practice adding and subtracting numbers. Today we had a short circle so we could jump right into learning about The National Flag of Canada Day. We learned that in 1965 February 15th, our flag was first used. Next we went to Gym and Music and came back to work on our flags. The Canadian Flag is twice as wide as it is high. Students used this math information to draw their own flags. This was very challenging and students worked hard to figure it out. After Lunch we continued making flags and distributing them to other classrooms to teach them about Flag Day. We were able to give every teacher and classroom a Canadian Flag made by us. To end the day we began our 9th Auction. Congratulations to Justin and Keyn for making their first School Wide Announcement!
Homework: Plan how you will celebrate Flag Day on the 15th with your family. Blog written by Mr. Bhachu with input from Megan, Bodhi, and Max. Before we started circle we worked on spelling months of the year. Some people were very good at knowing the spelling of months. After circle we began Number talks and worked together to know a new strategy. We call it adding 10 - 1. We had an indoor recess and we did go noodle. After we worked on writing sentences with because and so. We had an indoor lunch and we were able to watch a movie. After lunch we had buddies. We played a game called battleship. To end the day we worked on drawing Canadian Flags for flag day and then we worked on writing an Arctic Legend.
Homework: Tell your parents about how to play battleship and how to use the strategy 10 - 1 for adding 9. Rory, Megan, Kaashvi, Zainab and Calin helped write this blog. Today in Courage Circle, some people shared and some didn't. Many students were away or late. We played a new game we made up called Gotcha! After circle we used small whiteboards for number talks. We tried to solve problems without using counting on. We had to use friends of 10, doubles, or adding 10 or regrouping. Then we had Language Talks. In Language Talks we talked about how to add detail to a sentence. Then we tried to create complex sentences from a simple sentence. Next we went to gym until lunch. In gym we were able to stay for 2 periods because we needed to be police officers for the other grade 2 classes. After lunch we read quietly and then worked on getting our postcards into Iris. You can see our videos in Iris now. Let's check at home. We were so busy working on Iris and Prodigy that we missed our body break.
Homework: Show your video in Iris and tell your parents about the different math strategies we are learning. Blog written by Megan, Areeba, Charlie, Eva, Keyn, Zainab, Landon and Laydon. In Courage Circle some people were sharing about what they did after school yesterday. Then we did Number Talks. In Number talks we gave a value to each letter of the alphabet and then tried to find the value of our names. It was challenging. Some students are working on understanding how Base 10 blocks can help with addition. Natalia's name was worth the most and Kaashvi's came second. We went to the learning commons to exchange our books for new ones before we went to gym and music. When we came back we had a snack and then tried to find the value of different vocabulary words from our Science and Social Studies. In the afternoon we began planning our stories.
Homework: Tell your parents about how we did our math today. |
